Monday night during Night 5 of “The Voice” Season 15, Haitian-American singer Zaxai took on Redbone‘s “Come and Get Your Love” and caused two coaches to turn their chairs around: Jennifer Hudson and Kelly Clarkson. The bad news for Kelly was that Jennifer used her one and only block of the season to stop her from mentoring Zaxai, so he became a member of Team Jennifer by default. Did Jennifer use her block wisely? Watch NBC’s “The Voice” blind audition video above and read the coaches’ comments below.
“I couldn’t wait,” Jennifer explained to Kelly about why she decided to use her block. As soon as I heard [Zaxai’s] voice, I knew you were going to want him. That’s why I had to block you.” Kelly completely understood Jennifer’s strategy, telling Zaxai, “You’re so good. Your voice is so great. Your runs are so just careful and precise and beautiful.”
Jennifer later divulged that she turned around for Zaxai because of his “beautiful” voice. “I want to hear some more of it,” she smiled. “It was nice and soulful. You sing like such a performer, like a showman. You seem ready. Welcome to Team JHud!”
In his “The Voice” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about the performance: “First generation Haitian-American Zaxai learned the value of hard work from his parents who moved their family to New York to build a better life. One note into his rendition of Redbone‘s ‘Come and Get Your Love,’ Jennifer had already hit her button for Zaxai. Kelly also jumped into the fray with her own turn, but unfortunately Jennifer had made the right pick with her block and stopped her from having a chance, successfully winning Zaxai for herself. Funny story, while he was working as an usher at Radio City Music Hall, Kelly accidentally kicked Zaxai in the head so it seems like Jennifer delivered karma tonight.”
