Tuesday night during Night 6 of “The Voice” Season 15, blues singer Cody Ray Raymond took on Albert King‘s “Born Under a Bad Sign” and caused two coaches to turn their chairs around: Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson. Cody has been through a lot in his life, as he explained that he spent a year on the North Pole in the military and even played music for food in Seattle. After a brief deliberation he ultimately decided to join Team Kelly. Watch NBC’s “The Voice” blind audition video above and read the coaches’ comments below.
“Thank you for your service,” Kelly told the 26-year-old military veteran. “I love it though. So you’re just alone with your music up there? That’s a lot of solitude. You’re like, ‘I’m glad to be here!’ It sounds effortless and that’s what I love. I would love the challenge of throwing something at you.”
When Cody noted that he loves being challenged, Jennifer responded, “Here at JHud Productions we love a challenge. What makes a singer great is when you can sing about your story and that’s what you gave us. You have a melody in your voice. You just let it flow and you tell that story. And that’s what makes Cody, Cody.” Despite Jennifer’s best efforts, Cody chose Kelly as his mentor for Season 15.
In his “The Voice” live blog, our recapper Kevin Jacobsen had this to say about the performance: “Cody Ray Raymond may be just 26, but he’s lived a lot of life. The Seattle, Washington native is a martial arts expert, veteran and street musician, and now he’s auditioning with the classic blues song ‘Born Under a Bad Sign’ by Albert King. All four coaches are loving his bluesy voice, with Kelly turning first followed by Jennifer. Ultimately they are the only coaches to turn, but all four clearly love his overall vibe. He mentions living in the North Pole for a year while serving, which the coaches are also impressed by. Kelly is fascinated by how he translated his story into his music. Jennifer says he has a cool melody in his voice that helps tell his story. Cody Ray picks Kelly as his coach.”
