“Dancing with the Stars” isn’t just a dance competition, it’s also a popularity contest. The results each week are determined by combining the judges’ scores with the votes of viewers at home. That’s how low-scoring contestants with passionate fan bases can linger even when more gifted hoofers are given their walking papers. This season radio personality Bobby Bones and “Bachelorette” star Joe Amabile have the potential to fit that bill. But will one of them make it all the way to the finals? Will neither of them? Will (gasp) both of them? Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
In the first two weeks of competition there have already been four episodes. Grocery Store Joe has performed in three of those shows, and he got the lowest score every time. But in the first week of the competition, he wasn’t even in the bottom six when viewer votes were factored in, which demonstrates just how much passion there is for him from the fanatical “Bachelor” Nation.
Bones has scored better than Amabile, but he’s starting to backslide. He made a name for himself in week-one with his raucous celebration after he completed his very first dance of the competition. The judges found his enthusiasm endearing, but after just two weeks it might be starting to wear thin. He improvised some moves during his routine on New York City Night, and his pro partner (and choreographer) Sharna Burgess wasn’t too happy about that. And then on Las Vegas Night the next day his scores dipped: the judges gave him 19 out of 30, down from the 20s he received for his first two routines of the season.
But neither celeb has been eliminated yet, and maybe they won’t be. In season 24 David Ross charmed the audience so much that he ended up in second place overall, outdoing a number of higher-scoring contestants like Normani Kordei, Simone Biles, Heather Morris and Nancy Kerrigan. So if the fans keep supporting them, the sky’s the limit for Bones and Grocery Store Joe.
